For respiratory complaints, steam inhalation cannot be beat for effectiveness and a quick sense of "relief."
The heat and moisture from steam can carry essential oils into the air and cause the molecules to expand exponentially. There is a big difference between one drop of essential oil on a tissue, and one that is placed into hot water! It is a fun experiment to compare the two methods simultaniously.
A LONG LASTING STEAM can be done by simmering (not boiling) water in the stove and adding 3-5 drops of essential oil. Shut your eyes and inhale, covering your head with a towel for intensified effect. Take care not to burn yourself, stop if you have ANY discomfort.
A QUICK STEAM can be done by heating a mug of water on the stove or microwave and adding 2-3 drops of essential oil to the hot water. Shut your eyes, and cup your hand over your nose and the mug to inhale.
A CONVENIENT STEAM can be done by filling the bathroom sink with hot water and adding 3-5 drops of essential oil. Shut your eyes and lean over the sink to inhale.
